The Maharashtra government has announced a rescheduling of the Eid-e-Milad holiday in Mumbai, shifting it from September 16th to September 18th. This decision was made following requests from Muslim MLAs and organisations who sought to avoid a clash with the Ganpati immersion ceremonies, which are typically held on September 17th. The move aims to maintain peace and social harmony between the two communities during these overlapping festival periods.
The official notification issued on Friday explains the rationale behind the shift. It states that while Eid-e-Milad, a significant religious festival for Muslims, is traditionally celebrated on a large scale with processions, the presence of the Hindu festival Anant Chaturdashi on September 17th could potentially create tensions. Therefore, the Muslim community has decided to organize the procession program on September 18th, leading to the corresponding change in the public holiday.
Outside of Mumbai City and its suburbs, district collectors have been given the discretion to either maintain the holiday on September 16th or move it to September 18th, depending on the local procession schedules. This flexibility allows for adjustments based on the specific circumstances in each region.
