The escalating violence in Manipur has reached its second day, leaving six people dead in fresh clashes. The violence erupted after an elderly Meitei man was killed in a rocket-propelled bomb attack by suspected Kuki insurgents in the Moirang town. The incident sparked a chain reaction, leading to further clashes between armed groups of the Meitei and Kuki communities. The groups involved identify themselves as “village defence volunteers.”
The most recent incident took place in the Jiribam district, where a 63-year-old man named Yurembam Kulendra Singha was killed in an attack on the Nungchappi village. The police confirmed the attack and stated that a team was dispatched to the area but faced gunfire. The police retaliated and brought the situation under control. Further details suggest five others perished in gunfights between the rival groups.
Security forces are employing a multi-pronged approach to combat the violence. Anti-drone systems have been deployed following the first suspected insurgent drone attacks on Indian soil. Additionally, army helicopters are monitoring the situation, and combing operations are being conducted in both the hills and valleys. Social media monitoring is also in place to identify and apprehend individuals instigating violence.
The violence has led to a sense of fear and frustration among residents, who are calling for increased security measures and demanding accountability. Many residents have expressed disappointment with the state and central government's response to the escalating violence, emphasizing the need for better protection and peace.
