Manipur Violence Continues, CM Meets Governor
  • Manipur CM meets Governor amid fresh violence.
  • Seven killed, 15 injured in past five days.
  • BJP sources deny CM Biren Singh's resignation.

The volatile situation in Manipur continues to escalate, with a fresh wave of violence claiming the lives of seven individuals and injuring over 15 in the past five days. This alarming development prompted Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to meet Governor L Acharya on Saturday evening to discuss the escalating security concerns. The meeting took place amidst growing speculations surrounding Singh's potential resignation, which he vehemently denied. Singh emphasized his intention to address the ongoing unrest, requesting increased power for the state government to combat external elements deemed responsible for the turmoil. The CM's plea for a more aggressive approach towards these elements reflects the gravity of the situation and the urgency to restore peace in the region.

The recent surge in violence stemmed from a series of incidents, including a gun battle between two armed groups in the Jirtheibam district. The conflict arose after an elderly man was fatally shot while sleeping, igniting a fierce exchange of fire that left three suspected Kuki militants dead and an armed Meitei man killed. The violence further escalated with the tragic deaths of five individuals in Jiribam district on Saturday, prompting the district magistrate to implement prohibitory orders to curb further unrest. The volatile environment also saw rocket attacks in Bishnupur district on Friday, resulting in the death of a man residing on the premises of the late former chief minister Mairenbam Koireng. These attacks also caused damage to two structures, highlighting the widespread nature of the violence and its devastating consequences.

Despite the turbulent situation, BJP sources have firmly denied any possibility of Singh's resignation. The party maintains its unwavering support for the Chief Minister, emphasizing his commitment to addressing the law and order challenges in the state. This stance was further solidified by Manipur BJP MLAs, who urged Singh to remain in his position, advising him to resist any emotional decision-making. While the BJP's support for Singh provides a sense of continuity in leadership, the immediate focus remains on stabilizing the situation and mitigating the ongoing violence. To enhance security measures and combat the growing threat posed by drones, authorities have deployed anti-drone systems in fringe areas of the state. The deployment of these systems reflects a proactive approach to addressing the use of drones in perpetrating violence, as witnessed in recent attacks. The Manipur Police has also initiated the process of procuring additional anti-drone systems to bolster its security measures and effectively counter the threat posed by these unmanned aerial vehicles.
