This alarming development prompted Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh to meet Governor L Acharya on Saturday evening to discuss the escalating security concerns. The meeting took place amidst growing speculations surrounding Singh's potential resignation, which he vehemently denied. Singh emphasized his intention to address the ongoing unrest, requesting increased power for the state government to combat external elements deemed responsible for the turmoil. The recent surge in violence stemmed from a series of incidents, including a gun battle between two armed groups in the Jirtheibam district. The conflict arose after an elderly man was fatally shot while sleeping, igniting a fierce exchange of fire that left three suspected Kuki militants dead and an armed Meitei man killed. The violence further escalated with the tragic deaths of five individuals in Jiribam district on Saturday, prompting the district magistrate to implement prohibitory orders to curb further unrest. The volatile environment also saw rocket attacks in Bishnupur district on Friday, resulting in the death of a man residing on the premises of the late former chief minister Mairenbam Koireng. These attacks also caused damage to two structures, highlighting the widespread nature of the violence and its devastating consequences.
Despite the turbulent situation, BJP sources have firmly denied any possibility of Singh's resignation.
