Manipur internet suspended in 5 districts amid protests
  • Manipur govt suspends internet in 5 valley districts
  • Suspension is for 5 days starting from 3:00 PM
  • Students clashed with security forces, over 40 injured

The situation in Manipur continues to be volatile, with the state government taking the drastic step of suspending internet services in five valley districts. This decision comes after a series of protests by students who are demanding the removal of the state's Director General of Police (DGP) and security advisor. The protests escalated on Tuesday when over 40 students were injured in clashes with security forces as they attempted to march towards the Raj Bhavan, the governor's residence, to press their demands.

The government's order to suspend internet services, which came into effect on Tuesday evening, cites concerns about the potential spread of misinformation and inflammatory material through social media and messaging services. The order states that the temporary suspension of internet and mobile data services, including broadband, VPNs, and other services, is necessary to prevent further violence and maintain public order. The suspension is set to last for five days, affecting the districts of Imphal West, Imphal East, Thoubal, Bishnupur, and Kakching.

The protests highlight the deep-seated discontent among students and the wider population in Manipur. The students' demands for the removal of the DGP and security advisor stem from their perception that these officials have failed to adequately address the security concerns and restore peace in the state. The recent incidents of violence and unrest have further fuelled tensions and anxieties, leading to widespread calls for accountability and reform.
