Lokayukta to Probe CM Siddaramaiah in Land Scam Case
  • Bengaluru court orders Lokayukta investigation against Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah.
  • Investigation concerns allegations of illegal land allotments to CM's wife.
  • Siddaramaiah vows to face investigation, denies any wrongdoing.

The Karnataka political landscape has been shaken by a recent court order directing the Lokayukta, the state's anti-corruption watchdog, to investigate Chief Minister Siddaramaiah in connection with allegations of illegal land allotments. The Special Court for Elected Representatives in Bengaluru issued the order on Wednesday, directing the Lokayukta police in Mysuru to conduct the investigation. The investigation stems from complaints alleging irregularities in the allocation of 14 land plots worth Rs 56 crore to Siddaramaiah's wife, Parvathi, by the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA).

The court's decision follows the lifting of a stay imposed by the Karnataka High Court in August 19, which had prevented any action on the complaints against the Chief Minister. The stay was challenged by social activist Snehamayi Krishna, who filed a petition seeking an investigation into the allegations. The Special Court, after reviewing the petition, ordered the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) and the commencement of a Lokayukta probe.

Advocate Vasant Kumar, representing the petitioner, stated that the FIR would be registered under the jurisdiction of the Mysuru Lokayukta. He further argued that for a transparent investigation, Siddaramaiah should step down as Chief Minister during the investigation process. However, the Chief Minister, while acknowledging the court's order, dismissed the allegations and expressed his willingness to cooperate fully with the investigation. In a statement posted on X, he maintained his innocence and reiterated his determination to face the investigation and clear his name.

The allegations against Siddaramaiah, if proven, could have serious consequences for his political career. The investigation will likely delve into the intricacies of the land allotment process and the role played by MUDA officials. The outcome of the Lokayukta investigation, expected to be completed within three months, will be crucial in determining the future of the case and the political fate of the Chief Minister.
