Kolkata Blast Injures Rag Picker Amid Protests

A blast in central Kolkata has shaken the city and raised concerns about security, especially amidst ongoing protests by junior doctors. The incident, which occurred on the intersection of Blochmann Street and SN Banerjee Road, resulted in injuries to a 58-year-old rag picker, identified as Bapi Das. According to reports, a plastic gunny bag was found at the scene and removed by the bomb disposal squad. The injured rag picker was rushed to NRS Medical College and Hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Following the blast, the Kolkata Police immediately cordoned off the area and called in the Bomb Detection and Disposal Squad (BDDS). After the BDDS team inspected the bag and vicinity, traffic was allowed to resume. The police are investigating the incident and are working to determine the cause of the blast.

Meanwhile, the junior doctors' protest continues in Kolkata, demanding justice and enhanced safety measures at medical institutions. Their protest near Swasthya Bhawan follows the Supreme Court's deadline for doctors to resume work on Tuesday. The junior doctors have expressed frustration over their demands for a live telecast of a meeting with the Chief Minister and for improved security measures being ignored.

The situation has been further complicated by a claim made by the Trinamool Congress (TMC) that 'Ultra-Left and Left' organizations were preparing to 'attack' the protesting doctors. TMC leader Kunal Kunal Ghosh posted an audio clip claiming an attack was being planned. The Kolkata Police, taking suo moto cognisance of the TMC claim, arrested two people in connection with the alleged plot.

The incident highlights the ongoing tension and unrest in Kolkata, with the blast adding a new layer of concern to the existing security challenges posed by the junior doctors' protests.
