Mallikarjun Kharge, the president of the Indian National Congress, experienced a health scare during a public gathering in Kathua, Jammu and Kashmir, on Sunday. While addressing the rally ahead of the third phase of elections in the region, the 82-year-old leader began experiencing difficulty breathing. Fellow Congress workers immediately rushed to his aid, providing him with water. After taking a brief pause, Kharge resumed his speech, though he finished it quickly. Congress members then helped him return to his seat.
In a lighthearted moment following the incident, Kharge made a humorous remark about his health, stating, "We will fight to restore statehood. I am turning 83, I am not going to die so early. I will stay alive till PM Modi is removed from power." This comment was directed at the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Karnataka minister and Kharge's son, Priyank Kharge, provided an update on his father's health, assuring the public that his father was doing well. He stated, "Congress President Sri Kharge felt slightly unwell while addressing a public meeting in Jasrota, Jammu & Kashmir. He has been checked upon by his medical team and apart from slightly low blood pressure, he is doing well. Extremely grateful for everyone's concern. His resolve, along with people’s good wishes, keeps him going strong."
Jammu and Kashmir is currently preparing for the final phase of assembly elections, scheduled for October 1. The campaigning period will end on September 29, ahead of the third phase. The election results are expected to be announced on October 8. In the third phase, 40 constituencies will participate, with 24 of these constituencies located in the Jammu division.
