Kejriwal to Resign, Demands Early Elections
  • Kejriwal to resign after two days
  • Demands elections in November with Maharashtra
  • Claims he protected the Constitution from jail

In a dramatic turn of events following his release on bail from the Supreme Court, Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal announced his intention to resign from his position after a mere two days. Addressing a party worker on Sunday, Kejriwal emphasized his commitment to seeking a mandate from the people, stating that he would not occupy the CM chair until a verdict is delivered in the upcoming elections. He declared his intention to actively campaign, going door-to-door in every neighborhood, seeking the people's approval before resuming his post.

Kejriwal further escalated the political tension by demanding that elections be held concurrently with the Maharashtra elections, scheduled for November. He asserted that until the elections are conducted, a temporary CM from his party, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), would take over the reins of government. The current schedule calls for the Delhi elections to be held in February, but Kejriwal's proposal seeks to expedite the process. He confirmed that his deputy, Manish Sisodia, would not be assuming the CM position, and both leaders would dedicate themselves to engaging directly with the electorate.

Addressing criticism from the BJP, which had demanded his resignation while in jail, Kejriwal defended his decision to remain in office, asserting that he acted to safeguard the Indian Constitution. He claimed that he had deliberately chosen not to resign while in detention to challenge the BJP's perceived attempt to manipulate the situation. He highlighted the Supreme Court's ruling, which questioned the government's assertion that a government cannot function from prison. Kejriwal concluded by claiming the court's verdict confirmed the viability of governing from jail, implicitly challenging the BJP's efforts to pressure him into resignation.
