A collision between a train and an LPG gas cylinder placed on the tracks near a crossing in Kanpur, India, has triggered a comprehensive investigation, raising concerns about a potential act of sabotage or a prank gone wrong. The incident, which occurred late on Sunday evening, resulted in the recovery of suspicious items, including a gunpowder-like substance and petrol-filled bottles, from the tracks. This discovery has led authorities to explore both possibilities—a deliberate attempt to derail a train or an influencer's attempt to create viral content.
The incident bears striking similarities to a previous derailment in Kanpur on August 17th, where 20 coaches of the Sabarmati Express derailed after its engine struck an object on the tracks. While no casualties or injuries were reported in either incident, the similarities have raised red flags. Authorities are focusing on the possibility of sabotage, citing the deliberate placement of the LPG cylinder on the tracks. The Anti-Terrorism Squad (ATS), Intelligence Bureau (IB), and Special Task Force (STF) have joined forces to conduct a thorough investigation.
The Kalindi Express, en route from Prayagraj to Bhiwani, struck the gas cylinder at around 8:30 pm near the Sarjapur police station limits, just after crossing Munderi. The loco pilot, noticing the danger, immediately applied the emergency brakes, but the train's speed prevented a complete stop. The train collided with the cylinder, causing damage but avoiding any casualties. Authorities, including police and railway officials, swiftly arrived at the scene and discovered the remnants of the cylinder along with the suspicious items.
While the possibility of sabotage is being actively investigated, authorities are also considering the possibility of a prank or a misguided attempt to create viral content. Recent incidents involving YouTubers placing objects on railway tracks to create ‘experimental’ videos have highlighted the potential dangers of such actions. The arrest of a YouTuber named Gulzar Sheikh in August for obstructing trains by placing bricks, gravel, cylinders, and even a bicycle on the tracks underscores the seriousness of this issue. Authorities are determined to investigate all angles of the incident and bring the perpetrators to justice.
