The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has made a significant move by introducing match fees for players participating in the Indian Premier League (IPL). This historic decision, announced by BCCI secretary Jay Shah on social media, aims to reward consistent performances and recognize the exceptional talents of IPL cricketers. According to the announcement, each player will receive a match fee of Rs 7.5 lakhs per game in addition to their existing contracts. This means that a player who participates in all league matches of a season will earn a lucrative sum of Rs 1.05 crore alongside their contracted amount. Each franchise will allocate Rs 12.60 crore to cover the match fees for the season, signifying a new era for the IPL and its players.
The announcement of match fees comes alongside a new set of player retention rules for the upcoming mega auction. While the exact details regarding the number of Indian or overseas players that can be retained are yet to be confirmed, the report suggests that teams will be allowed to retain five players and use one Right-to-Match (RTM) card during the auction. This implies that teams can retain a significant number of their core players, ensuring continuity and stability within their squads. The retention rules will be finalized ahead of the BCCI's 93rd Annual General Meet, scheduled for September 29th.
The overall purse for each team is expected to be increased to between Rs 115-120 crore for the upcoming season, compared to the previous salary cap of Rs 90 crore. This increase in the salary cap reflects the growing popularity and financial strength of the IPL, enabling teams to assemble even stronger squads. The date for the mega auction, likely to be held in the second week of November, will be announced along with its venue. This upcoming auction is expected to witness intense bidding wars as franchises compete to secure the services of some of the world's best cricketers.
