An Instagram influencer has ignited a heated debate in Bengaluru after claiming that the city would be deserted if North Indians were to leave. Sugandh Sharma, in an Instagram reel filmed in the city's Koramangala area, asserted that even paying guest accommodations (PGs) would be empty if North Indians were to vacate Bengaluru. The video, which went viral on social media, sparked widespread condemnation from residents and celebrities alike, who denounced Sharma's remarks as disrespectful and divisive.
The outrage against Sharma's comments stemmed from their perceived disregard for the city's multicultural character and rich heritage. Many pointed out that Bengaluru is a vibrant city that thrives on its diverse population, with contributions from individuals hailing from various regions of India and beyond. Several public figures, including actor and rapper Chandan Shetty, actresses Chaithra Achar and Anupama Gowda, as well as Bigg Boss fame Rupesh Rajanna and Dhanraj, openly expressed their discontent with Sharma's statements, highlighting the importance of maintaining harmony and inclusivity in Bengaluru's multicultural landscape.
Sharma's video, however, wasn't the first instance of contentious remarks regarding the city's diverse demographics. Earlier in July, a woman shared her experience of being harassed by auto drivers in Bengaluru, attributing their behavior to her being from North India. She described being subjected to inquiries about her reasons for being in Bengaluru, her Kannada learning progress, and her preferences beyond the city's weather, all while feeling a sense of discrimination and disrespect from the locals. In another incident, a Reddit user detailed a horrifying cab ride experience where he encountered a driver who seemingly targeted him due to his perceived North Indian origin, exhibiting reckless driving behavior in response to the passenger's request for air conditioning.
These incidents, along with Sharma's recent remarks, underscore the need for fostering an environment of inclusivity and understanding in Bengaluru, a city that prides itself on its diverse and welcoming spirit. The controversy sparked by Sharma's video serves as a reminder of the importance of responsible social media usage and the potential for online content to exacerbate existing societal tensions.
