The Indian government, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has implemented a series of policy changes aimed at benefiting farmers, focusing specifically on the agricultural sectors of Basmati rice, onions, and edible oils. These decisions, announced on Friday and highlighted by government officials on Saturday, seek to stimulate exports, increase domestic production, and ultimately, ensure better prices for farmers' produce.
The most significant changes involve the removal of the minimum export price (MEP) on onions and Basmati rice. This move, according to government officials, will provide farmers with greater freedom to export their produce and potentially command higher prices in international markets. The reduction of the export duty on onions from 40% to 20% further encourages exports and aims to enhance the earnings of onion-producing farmers.
Simultaneously, the government has increased the import duty on edible oils, including crude palm, soyabean, and sunflower oils, from 12.5% to 32.5%, and on refined oils from 13.75% to 35.75%. This increase is intended to encourage domestic production of oilseeds, such as mustard, sunflower, and groundnut. By making imported oils more expensive, the government hopes to incentivize farmers to increase their acreage of oilseed crops. This strategy, in turn, aims to improve the livelihoods of oilseed farmers and contribute to India's self-sufficiency in edible oils.
