India Expands Ayushman Bharat to Cover All Senior Citizens 70+
  • India's Ayushman Bharat scheme expands to cover all senior citizens aged 70 and above.
  • The scheme provides ₹5 lakh health coverage per year for secondary and tertiary care.
  • Senior citizens can either opt for the scheme or continue with existing health plans.

The Indian government has taken a significant step towards improving healthcare access for its senior citizens by expanding the Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (AB PM-JAY) to cover all individuals aged 70 and above, irrespective of their income. This decision, announced by Union Minister of Information and Broadcasting Ashwini Vaishnaw, is set to benefit an estimated 4.5 crore families across the country.

The AB PM-JAY, launched in 2018, is the world's largest publicly funded health assurance scheme, providing a health coverage of ₹5 lakh per family per year for secondary and tertiary care hospitalizations. The scheme currently covers 55 crore people from 12.34 crore families, regardless of the age of family members. This expansion of the program to include all senior citizens marks a significant step towards ensuring comprehensive healthcare for this vulnerable population segment.

The inclusion of senior citizens in the AB PM-JAY offers them access to a wider range of healthcare services, including hospitalization, surgeries, and other critical medical procedures. This is particularly crucial considering the increasing prevalence of age-related health issues and the rising healthcare costs in India. The scheme's coverage of ₹5 lakh per year provides a financial safety net for senior citizens, mitigating the financial burden associated with unexpected health emergencies.

The government has implemented a simple and accessible process for senior citizens to avail the benefits of the AB PM-JAY. Those aged 70 and above will receive a distinct card under the scheme for healthcare coverage. Senior citizens already covered under AB PM-JAY will get an additional top-up of ₹5 lakh per annum specifically for senior citizens in their families. Those benefiting from other public health insurance schemes have the option to either continue with their current plan or opt for coverage under AB PM-JAY.

The expansion of the Ayushman Bharat scheme to include all senior citizens is a positive step towards strengthening India's healthcare infrastructure and ensuring equitable access to healthcare for all citizens. By providing financial protection and access to quality healthcare services, the scheme aims to alleviate the financial burden on senior citizens and their families, contributing to their overall well-being and quality of life.
