Heavy Rains Lash Northern Odisha Due to Depression
  • Northern Odisha faces heavy rainfall.
  • Deep depression moves towards West Bengal.
  • IMD warns of flash floods and damage.

Northern Odisha, a region bordering West Bengal in eastern India, has been experiencing heavy rainfall since Saturday, September 14th, 2023. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued warnings of continued heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, and potential flash floods in the coming days. The cause of this heavy rainfall is a deep depression that has formed in the Bay of Bengal and is moving towards Gangetic West Bengal.

The IMD has issued forecasts for heavy to very heavy rainfall in several districts of Odisha, with isolated areas potentially experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. The most rainfall in the past 24 hours was recorded in Kusumi, Mayurbhanj district, at 136 mm. Other areas like Bhogorai and Jaleswar in Balasore district also received significant rainfall at 104 mm and 67 mm respectively. The IMD has warned of heavy to very heavy rainfall in specific districts like Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Balasore, Bhadrak, Jajpur, Kendrapara, Angul, Dhenkanal, Deogarh, Sundargarh, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Nayagarh, Boudh, Sambalpur, Kalahandi, Kandhamal, Rayagada, Ganjam, Gajapati, and Nabarangpur.

The IMD has also highlighted the risks associated with the heavy rainfall, including the possibility of flash floods and waterlogging in low-lying areas. Additionally, the agency has cautioned about potential damage to kutcha roads and vulnerable houses made of mud or other temporary materials. The IMD has advised residents to avoid staying in vulnerable kutcha houses and to be aware of traffic congestion before traveling. Fishermen have been advised not to venture into the northern Bay of Bengal or along the Odisha coast until the morning of September 16th due to rough sea conditions. The IMD is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to provide updates on the weather conditions in the region.
