The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a 'red' alert for West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha, anticipating extremely heavy rainfall on Sunday. This warning comes as a deep depression formed over Gangetic West Bengal is expected to maintain its intensity until Sunday evening before gradually weakening into a depression over the following 24 hours. The IMD bulletin outlines the expected rainfall patterns for each affected region.
The 'red' alert for West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha indicates the potential for extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations. The IMD anticipates heavy to very heavy rainfall in parts of Gangetic West Bengal and Odisha on September 15, with isolated extremely heavy rainfall in south Gangetic West Bengal and north Odisha. Similarly, Jharkhand is expected to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations between September 15 and 17, with extremely heavy rainfall concentrated in south Jharkhand.
Furthermore, the IMD has issued an 'orange' alert for Chhattisgarh, East Madhya Pradesh, and Bihar, predicting very heavy rainfall at isolated locations between September 15 and 17. The weather department warns that the heavy rainfall is likely to trigger localized flooding of roads, waterlogging in low-lying areas, and disruption of traffic in urban areas. Landslides and reduced visibility due to heavy rainfall are also anticipated. In light of these potential hazards, the IMD advises fishermen to avoid venturing into the north Bay of Bengal until Monday and encourages the public to stay away from waterlogged areas and check for traffic congestion before traveling.
