Gujarat Men Transport Crocodile on Scooter After Flooding
  • Crocodile rescued in Vadodara, Gujarat.
  • Two men transported it on a scooter.
  • Heavy rains caused flooding, displacing wildlife.

The recent flooding in Gujarat, caused by days of heavy rainfall, has led to a surge in unusual encounters between humans and wildlife, particularly crocodiles. The Vishwamitri River, home to an estimated 440 crocodiles, overflowed due to water release from the Ajwa dam, forcing many of these reptiles to venture into nearby residential areas. This resulted in several incidents of crocodiles being spotted in unexpected locations, including on house terraces and even wading through floodwaters with a dog in their jaws.

One such incident captured the attention of the internet, where a video went viral showing two men transporting a crocodile on a scooter. The video, originally shared on X (formerly Twitter), showcased the men, identified as volunteers from the Indian Medical Association (IMA), taking the crocodile to the forest department office. The crocodile's mouth and legs were tied with rope to restrict its movement. The video sparked reactions ranging from amusement to concern, with many questioning the safety of transporting a crocodile on a scooter, particularly without helmets.

The video highlighted the broader challenges faced by authorities in managing the displacement of wildlife during extreme weather events. With 24 crocodiles rescued and 75 other animals, including snakes, cobras, and turtles, authorities like the Vadodara Range Forest Officer, Karansinh Rajput, underscored the significant challenges posed by the flood-induced wildlife displacement. He emphasized the proximity of several residential areas to the Vishwamitri River, increasing the likelihood of encounters with displaced wildlife.

The viral video served as a reminder of the interconnectedness of humans and the environment. It brought to light the potential dangers and challenges associated with unexpected wildlife encounters, especially during extreme weather events. While the video elicited humor and concern, it also emphasized the importance of responsible wildlife management practices and the need to prioritize both human and animal safety during such situations.
