G4 Urges Urgent UNSC Reform Ahead of UN's 80th
  • G4 nations seek UNSC reform.
  • Group calls for urgent action.
  • Better representation for developing nations.

The Group of Four (G4) nations, comprising India, Brazil, Germany, and Japan, have issued a call for urgent reform of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) as the UN approaches its 80th anniversary. The G4, who are all seeking permanent membership in the UNSC, held a meeting on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on September 23rd to discuss progress on their reform agenda.

In a joint statement released on September 26th, the G4 Foreign Ministers acknowledged the 'significant challenges' facing the multilateral system, particularly centered around the UN. They welcomed the call for reform at the UN's 'Summit of the Future' held earlier in the week. The Ministers emphasized the need for an expansion of both permanent and non-permanent UNSC membership to better reflect the changing global landscape. This expansion, they argued, would enhance the participation of developing countries and those making significant contributions to international peace and security.

The G4 Ministers highlighted the need for improved representation of regions such as Africa, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America and the Caribbean within both permanent and non-permanent categories of the UNSC. They further reaffirmed their strong support for the Common African Position (CAP) based on the Ezulwini Consensus and the Sirte Declaration. Expressing concern over the lack of progress in intergovernmental negotiations (IGN), the G4 Ministers called for the immediate commencement of text-based negotiations on the reform process.
