Food Safety Concerns Drive Strict UP Measures
  • UP mandates CCTV in food outlets
  • Chefs and waiters must wear masks
  • Food safety rules to be amended

In a bid to combat growing concerns over food safety in Uttar Pradesh, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced stringent measures aimed at ensuring the integrity of the state's food industry. The directive comes in response to a series of disturbing incidents involving food adulteration, including the viral video of a teenager spitting on rotis in a Saharanpur eatery and a Ghaziabad juice vendor being arrested for allegedly serving urine-laced beverages.

The new measures mandate the installation of CCTV cameras in all hotels and restaurants, a move aimed at deterring such unsanitary practices and providing evidence in case of future transgressions. Furthermore, all chefs and waiters will be required to wear masks and gloves while handling food, a measure intended to minimize the risk of contamination and promote hygiene standards.

Beyond these immediate actions, the government has also pledged to thoroughly investigate all food establishments in the state, including dhabas, restaurants, and related businesses. Police verification of all employees will be conducted, and the Food Safety and Standards Act will be amended to strengthen enforcement and ensure the purity of food items. This multi-pronged approach demonstrates the government's commitment to addressing the issue comprehensively and restoring public trust in the food industry.

The decision to mandate the display of the names and addresses of operators, proprietors, and managers at all food centres is particularly significant. This move fosters transparency and allows consumers to make informed choices about where they choose to dine. By holding food establishments accountable and providing clear information to customers, the government seeks to empower consumers and deter future instances of food adulteration.

The recent incidents of food adulteration have sparked public outrage and concern across India. While the Uttar Pradesh government's actions are commendable, it is important to recognize that this is a multifaceted issue that requires a concerted effort from all stakeholders. Consumers must be vigilant, reporting any suspicious activity or potential violations to the authorities. The food industry itself must uphold ethical practices, prioritize food safety, and work collaboratively with the government to build a culture of accountability and trust.
