Floods in Vijayawada Cause Train Diversions
  • Two trains from Madurai Railway Division diverted.
  • Trains will skip Vijayawada and Warangal due to flooding.
  • Diversion route includes Renigunta, Guntakkal, Secunderabad.

The relentless monsoon rains have wreaked havoc in various parts of India, causing widespread flooding and disruption to transportation services. One such instance is the recent diversion of two trains from the Madurai Railway Division due to flooding and waterlogging between Vijayawada and Kazipet railway stations in South Central Railway.

The affected trains are the 12687 Madurai–Chandigarh Superfast Express and the 22613 Rameswaram (Mandapam) – Ayodhya Superfast Express. Both trains were diverted to run via alternate routes to avoid the flooded tracks. The 12687 Superfast Express, departing Madurai at 11.35 p.m. on September 1st, was rerouted through Renigunta, Guntakkal, Secunderabad, Kazipet, skipping stops at Arakkonam, Perambur, Nayudupetta, Vijayawada, and Warangal.

Similarly, the 22613 Superfast Express, departing Mandapam at 12.30 a.m. on September 2nd, was diverted via Renigunta, Gooty, Kacheguda, and Kazipet, skipping stops at Chennai Egmore, Gudur, Vijayawada, and Warangal. These diversions were implemented as a precautionary measure to ensure the safety of passengers and train operations during the flood situation.

The flooding has severely impacted rail travel in the region, causing delays and cancellations for many passengers. South Central Railway has been working diligently to clear the affected tracks and restore normal operations as soon as possible. However, the extent of the damage and the duration of the repair works remain uncertain. Passengers are advised to check with the railway authorities for the latest updates on train schedules and travel advisories.

This incident highlights the vulnerability of railway infrastructure to extreme weather events. With climate change intensifying, such disruptions are likely to become more frequent in the future. It emphasizes the need for robust disaster preparedness plans and infrastructure resilience to mitigate the impact of floods and other natural calamities on transportation networks.
