  • Fadnavis condemns the glorification of the encounter, stating that rule of law must be upheld.

The recent police encounter in Thane’s Badlapur, where a man accused of sexually assaulting two kindergarten girls was shot dead, has sparked debate and controversy. Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, while reiterating the government's stance against endorsing police encounters, defended the shooting as an act of self-defense, stating that police officers cannot “clap” if attacked. This statement comes amidst growing concerns and public opinion regarding the circumstances surrounding the encounter.

The encounter occurred when the accused, Akshay Shinde, was being transported from Taloja jail to Badlapur. According to police accounts, Shinde managed to snatch an officer's gun and opened fire, prompting the police to retaliate. While Fadnavis emphasized that the police will act to protect themselves, he also condemned the glorification of the encounter, which was evident in the numerous posters and hoardings praising the BJP leader and celebrating the incident as “Badla Pura” (a wordplay on Badlapur, implying revenge). He firmly stated that such glorification is unacceptable and that a fair investigation into the encounter will be conducted by the state CID.

The incident has further intensified the debate on police encounters in India. While some argue that they are necessary to combat crime and deter criminals, others contend that they often violate human rights and perpetuate a culture of impunity. This case, particularly due to the nature of the crime alleged against Shinde, highlights the complex ethical and legal considerations surrounding police encounters. It raises questions about the adequacy of legal processes, the role of police discretion, and the potential for abuse of power.
