ED Finds Properties of Ex-Principal in Corruption Probe
  • ED raided ex-principal Sandip Ghosh's properties
  • Ghosh and wife accused of property irregularities
  • CBI investigating financial irregularities at college

The Enforcement Directorate (ED) has uncovered a web of alleged financial irregularities and property discrepancies linked to the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh. The investigation, initiated based on a First Information Report (FIR) filed by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Anti-Corruption Branch (ACB) of Kolkata, delves into allegations of corruption and financial improprieties within the college and hospital. This probe follows the arrest of Ghosh by the CBI on September 2, after a postgraduate trainee doctor was tragically raped and murdered at the medical institution the previous month.

The ED's investigation has revealed that Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh, the wife of the former principal, acquired two immovable properties without obtaining necessary approvals from the West Bengal government. These acquisitions, which were supposedly made in 2021, are now under intense scrutiny as the ED alleges that the approvals granted for these properties were post facto, meaning they were granted after the purchases were already completed. The ED asserts that during the time these properties were acquired, Sandip Ghosh held the position of principal at the RG Kar Medical College, while his wife, Dr. Sangeeta Ghosh, was an assistant professor at the same institution.

The ED's raid conducted on September 6 at multiple premises, including the residence of Ghosh and his relatives, yielded significant evidence. Among the items seized were documents relating to various properties, including a flat in Murshidabad, three flats in Kolkata, two homes acquired by both Sandip and Sangeeta Ghosh, and documents pertaining to a farmhouse owned by the couple. The ED maintains that these documents, along with other incriminating materials and digital devices belonging to Dr. Sandip Ghosh, provide prima facie evidence that the properties were acquired using funds derived from illegal or criminal activities, commonly referred to as 'Proceeds of Crime'.

The current investigation underscores the gravity of the allegations against Sandip Ghosh and his wife. The ED's discovery of potentially ill-gotten properties and the CBI's ongoing probe into alleged financial irregularities at the RG Kar Medical College have raised serious concerns about the integrity of the institution and the conduct of its former principal. As the investigation progresses, the ED and the CBI are likely to delve deeper into the intricacies of the case, potentially uncovering further evidence and exposing the extent of the alleged corruption. The outcome of this investigation will have a profound impact on the future of the RG Kar Medical College and the individuals implicated in this complex scandal.
