The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 auction is approaching, and franchises are strategizing their player retention strategies. The Delhi Capitals have reportedly finalized their retention list, with skipper Rishabh Pant at the top. This move silences speculations about a potential transfer to Punjab Kings, where former coach Ricky Ponting currently leads. However, these plans are not officially confirmed yet.
Pant, a pivotal all-format player for India, currently earns INR 16 crore, a figure likely to increase under the new guidelines expected from the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). According to a report from Cricbuzz, the wicketkeeper-batter's retention reflects the franchise's dedication to maintaining a strong core team.
Alongside Pant, the Capitals are expected to retain key players like Axar Patel and Kuldeep Yadav. In the overseas category, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Tristan Stubbs are also expected to remain with the franchise. Additionally, if the BCCI permits the retention of an uncapped player, wicketkeeper-batsman Abhishek Porel is likely to be secured as well.
The BCCI aimed to release the retention rules by the end of August but has faced delays. Nonetheless, the final guidelines are expected to be issued soon, with the Right to Match likely included in this mega auction. There is also ongoing discussion about the application of a previous rule that classified retired international players as 'uncapped players.'
As the IPL 2025 auction approaches, the Delhi Capitals are strategically positioning themselves to remain competitive in the league. Their aim is to field a formidable lineup for the upcoming season, ensuring they maintain a strong position in the tournament.
