Deep Depression Weakens, Heavy Rainfall Forecast

Deep Depression Weakens, Heavy Rainfall Forecast
  • Deep depression over West Bengal to weaken.
  • Heavy rainfall expected in several states.
  • IMD issues alerts for various regions.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has reported that the deep depression formed over Gangetic West Bengal and adjoining Bangladesh is moving westward and will gradually weaken into a ‘depression’ within the next 24 hours. The IMD, in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stated that the depression is expected to slowly traverse Gangetic West Bengal, maintaining its intensity until the evening of September 15th. Subsequently, it will continue its westward movement across Jharkhand and North Chhattisgarh, gradually diminishing into a depression over the following 24 hours.

The weather department has issued warnings of very heavy to heavy rainfall in several areas, particularly in Gangetic West Bengal, including Kolkata. Additionally, the IMD predicts extremely heavy rainfall in isolated locations of south Gangetic West Bengal on September 15th.

Beyond West Bengal, the IMD has issued an alert of very heavy to heavy rainfall for September 15th in isolated parts of Odisha, Jharkhand, Bihar, Chhattisgarh, and Sub-Himalayan West Bengal. The department further predicts isolated extremely heavy rainfall in south Jharkhand on September 15th, very heavy rainfall in Chhattisgarh and east Madhya Pradesh from September 15th to 17th, and similar conditions in west Madhya Pradesh from September 17th to 18th.

The IMD has issued an orange alert for Odisha, Bihar, and Madhya Pradesh from September 15th. Furthermore, alerts have been issued for Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, and Tripura for September 15th and 16th, with Assam and Meghalaya under alert from September 18th to 20th.

A developing depression in Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh has also prompted a warning from the IMD. A “well-marked low-pressure area” over northwest Uttar Pradesh is contributing to severe weather conditions, resulting in heavy rainfall in Uttarakhand. The IMD has cautioned of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall at isolated locations in Uttarakhand and flash flood warnings for Himachal Pradesh, particularly in Shimla and Sirmour districts.

East Uttar Pradesh is anticipated to receive isolated heavy rains on September 16th and 17th, while West Uttar Pradesh will experience similar conditions on September 17th. Southern India, specifically coastal Karnataka, Kerala, Mahe, and Lakshadweep, is expected to experience scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall.

Regarding Delhi, the Regional Meteorological Centre has indicated that the wet spell is likely to subside after September 14th, with another round of rainfall anticipated starting on September 18th.
