The arrest of a CPI(M) leader, Kalatan Dasgupta, and another individual, Sanjiv Das, has thrown the city of Kolkata into a political whirlwind. The arrests stem from an alleged conspiracy to attack junior doctors protesting outside the Swasthya Bhawan in Salt Lake, a scheme that has been brought to light by an audio clip released by TMC leader Kunal Ghosh. This incident has further inflamed tensions surrounding the ongoing protests by junior doctors, who are demanding increased security and the resignation of top officials following the rape and murder of a doctor at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital.

The audio clip, which purportedly reveals a plan to target protesting doctors in an attempt to discredit the Mamata Banerjee-led government, has been the catalyst for this investigation. The Bidhannagar Police initiated a suo motu case based on the clip and swiftly apprehended Das from Haltu in south Kolkata on Friday night. Dasgupta was apprehended the following morning. The police have verified the authenticity of the audio clip through technical analysis, and Das has reportedly admitted to being the voice on the recording.

While the police continue their investigation, they are working to identify individuals referred to in the clip as ‘Bappa,’ ‘Saheb,’ and ‘Dadu.’ The arrested individuals, Das and Dasgupta, are expected to be presented before a court later today, with the police seeking 14 days of custody to delve deeper into the alleged conspiracy. The arrests have been met with condemnation from senior CPI(M) leader Sujan Chakraborty, who alleges they are a tactic to divert attention from the ongoing protests and demands a CBI inquiry to fully investigate the alleged plot.

The incident has sparked outrage among junior doctors and fueled the ongoing protests. In response, additional police forces and CCTV cameras have been deployed at the protest site, where doctors remain steadfast in their demands for increased security and accountability. The TMC’s Ghosh has further escalated the situation by claiming that the audio clip was “leaked” by those plotting the attacks on doctors, suggesting a sinister game of political maneuvering is at play. With the arrests, investigations, and protests, the situation in Kolkata remains volatile, raising concerns about the escalation of political tensions and the potential for further unrest.
