The Indian National Congress (Congress) has secured chairs for four Parliamentary Standing Committees, a significant development in the ongoing negotiations between the government and the Opposition. These negotiations, crucial for ensuring a balance of power in the legislative process, have concluded with the Congress gaining representation in key committees across both houses of Parliament.
The Congress will hold chairs in three Lok Sabha committees: the External Affairs Standing Committee, the Standing Committee on Agriculture, and the Standing Committee on Rural Development. In the Rajya Sabha, the Congress will lead the Standing Committee for Education. This achievement comes after the Congress initially demanded chairs for five committees.
The agreement also extends representation to other parties within the INDIA alliance. The Samajwadi Party, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), and All India Trinamool Congress (AITC) are each expected to receive one committee chair, further strengthening the Opposition's presence in parliamentary proceedings.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Union Minister of State for Law and Justice and Parliamentary Affairs Arjun Ram Meghwal led the government's negotiations, while the Congress was represented by Deputy Leader in the Lok Sabha Gaurav Gogoi and chief whips Kodikunnil Suresh and Hairam Ramesh.
This outcome marks a notable shift from the previous Lok Sabha term. Despite holding 53 seats, the Congress only secured the chairmanship of one committee during that period. The current Lok Sabha sees the Congress with 99 members, a substantial increase, along with other significant Opposition parties such as the Samajwadi Party (37), TMC (29), and DMK (22). Their presence is expected to translate into a stronger voice within House committees, further balancing the power dynamics in the legislative process.
