The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating alleged corruption in the appointment of house staff at RG Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, India. The probe stems from a larger investigation into the rape-murder of a trainee doctor and alleged financial irregularities at the institution. According to a report by Times of India, the CBI has revealed that former principal Sandip Ghosh and his associates manipulated student results to favor specific candidates for house staff positions after the completion of their MBBS internships.
The CBI presented evidence to a special court, stating that Ghosh and his aides engaged in systematic rigging of student results to ensure the appointment of their preferred candidates. This manipulation bypassed the standard selection process and undermined the integrity of the appointments. The CBI's findings highlight a serious breach of trust and a blatant disregard for meritocratic selection practices.
The investigation has also uncovered a lack of transparency in the appointment process. The CBI report states that Ghosh, rather than adhering to established procedures, bypassed them entirely and directly appointed house staff of his own choosing.
