The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is investigating financial irregularities at RG Kar Medical College & Hospital in Kolkata and has uncovered significant flaws in the institution's medicine procurement system, particularly under the leadership of former principal Sandip Ghosh. The investigation has revealed that the crucial step of technical evaluation, designed to assess the expertise and reputation of bidders supplying medicines to reputable medical institutions, was systematically bypassed. This technical evaluation is paramount, as it directly impacts patient health by ensuring the quality of the supplied medicines.
The CBI's findings show that the technical evaluation was often ignored, allowing bidders lacking the necessary qualifications to participate in the financial bidding process. This practice enabled bidders with the lowest prices, even if they lacked the expertise or reputation to supply quality medicine, to secure contracts. This negligence has raised serious concerns about the quality of medicines used in the hospital, potentially jeopardizing patients' well-being.
Further exacerbating the situation, sources revealed that several RG Kar insiders, including postgraduate trainees, had repeatedly alerted former principal Sandip Ghosh about the concerning quality of the medicines being supplied. However, their concerns were consistently dismissed. The CBI investigation also uncovered information about a junior doctor who was tragically raped and murdered within the hospital premises in August. This doctor had been vocal about the poor quality of medicines, highlighting the potentially fatal consequences of the flawed procurement system.
