The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested the former principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, Sandip Ghosh, and the station house officer (SHO) who initially investigated the rape and murder of a trainee doctor. The arrests were made on allegations that both individuals misled investigators and attempted to conceal evidence, potentially sabotaging the investigation into the heinous crime that had sparked nationwide outrage.
The CBI's actions follow a period of intense scrutiny and protests by doctors, who demanded transparency and accountability in the handling of the case. The trainee doctor was tragically raped and murdered within the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College on August 9. The key suspect, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer at the hospital, was identified through CCTV footage after the victim's body was discovered. The CBI has conducted a polygraph test on Sanjay Roy but could not proceed with a narco analysis test due to his refusal, which is legally required.
The CBI took over the investigation from the Kolkata Police based on an order from the Calcutta High Court. The investigation has uncovered concerning details about Sanjay Roy's movements prior to the crime, including visits to a red light area in Sonagachi. The CBI has also investigated Anup Dutta, an assistant sub-inspector and member of the city police welfare board, due to suspicions about his close relationship with Sanjay Roy. The investigation aims to understand how Sanjay Roy could have had such unrestricted access to police barracks and the medical college premises, suggesting a possible breach of security protocols.
