A tragic incident unfolded in Faridabad, India, on Friday night when a car carrying two individuals, Viraj (26) and Punyashray Sharma (48), became trapped in a flooded underpass, leading to their untimely deaths. The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers posed by inclement weather and the importance of heeding safety warnings.
Viraj, a cashier at a private bank, and Punyashray, a manager, were returning home from Gurugram when their Mahindra XUV 700 became submerged in the flooded Old Faridabad Railway underpass around 11:50 pm. Heavy rains throughout the day had inundated the underpass, prompting authorities to issue warnings against entering the area. Despite these warnings, the victims chose to disregard the danger and proceed through the underpass, resulting in their tragic fate.
Rescue teams, including police and emergency personnel, arrived at the scene and struggled to pull the submerged car out of the floodwaters. They utilized life jackets and water tubes to assist in the rescue operation, but the efforts proved unsuccessful. Eventually, a passerby managed to help the men out of the car, but Viraj tragically succumbed to drowning on the spot. Punyashray was rushed to the Badshah Khan Civil Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
The incident highlights the importance of following safety guidelines during periods of heavy rainfall. Authorities had erected barricades at the entrance of the underpass and instructed motorists to take alternative routes due to the flooding. However, the victims ignored these warnings, choosing to take a risk that ultimately cost them their lives. This incident serves as a powerful reminder of the unpredictable nature of weather and the need to exercise caution when facing challenging conditions.
