BookMyShow CEO Summoned Over Coldplay Ticket Resale
  • Mumbai Police summons BookMyShow CEO
  • Investigation into alleged black market ticket sales
  • Coldplay concert tickets resold for exorbitant prices

The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) of the Mumbai Police has taken a significant step in addressing the issue of ticket scalping and the alleged involvement of a major ticketing platform. The EOW has summoned Ashish Hemrajani, CEO of Big Tree Entertainment, the parent company of BookMyShow, as part of an investigation into the black market sale of tickets for the highly anticipated Coldplay concert, scheduled to take place from January 19 to 21, 2025, at the DY Patil Stadium.

The summons follows a complaint filed by Advocate Amit Vyas, who alleges that BookMyShow has facilitated the black market resale of tickets for the concert. Vyas claims that the tickets, initially priced at Rs 2,500, are being resold by third parties and influencers for exorbitant sums, reaching up to Rs 3 lakh. He accuses BookMyShow of misleading the public and Coldplay fans and is seeking an FIR to be filed against the company on charges of fraud.

The EOW has already taken Vyas' statement and has identified several brokers linked to the alleged ticket scalping operation. The investigation is ongoing, with more individuals likely to be summoned as the case progresses. This summons to the BookMyShow CEO highlights the growing concern about the black market ticket resale industry and its impact on consumers. It demonstrates the authorities' determination to investigate the role of platforms like BookMyShow in this issue and to ensure fair and transparent ticketing practices.

This case raises important questions about the responsibility of ticketing platforms in preventing the resale of tickets at inflated prices. While platforms often claim to have measures in place to combat scalping, the high resale prices for Coldplay concert tickets suggest that these measures may not be effective. The outcome of this investigation could have significant implications for the ticketing industry in India, potentially leading to stricter regulations and greater accountability for platforms.
