BJP Blasts TMC Over Corruption, Sircar's Resignation
  • BJP attacks TMC over corruption
  • Sircar's letter exposes TMC's flaws
  • Congress criticized for silence

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) in West Bengal, citing a letter by TMC Rajya Sabha member Jawhar Sircar to party supremo and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee as evidence of widespread corruption and dictatorial tendencies within the ruling party. Sircar's letter, which announced his resignation from Parliament and politics, expressed his disillusionment with the state government's handling of corruption and its response to the outrage following the August 9 rape and murder of a junior doctor in Kolkata.

BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla declared that Sircar's letter exposed the “dirt, corruption and dictatorial attitude” within the TMC, accusing the party of having “corroded every institution in West Bengal” with corruption. He further alleged that the TMC's priority in the Kolkata doctor rape-and-murder case was not justice for the victim but an institutional cover-up. He questioned Mamata Banerjee's continued leadership, asking why she hadn't resigned in the face of public outcry and instead protected officials involved in the case. Poonawalla also directed criticism towards the Congress party, questioning why Rahul and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra remained silent on the case and why they hadn't visited the victim's parents.

Sircar, a retired bureaucrat, wrote in his letter that he could no longer bear the rampant corruption he witnessed, citing the public anger sparked by the rape and murder as a testament to the state of affairs. He expressed disappointment with the government's failure to address the grievances of protesting junior doctors, accusing the government of responding too little and too late to the scandal. He lamented that the government had not cracked down on corrupt doctors and officials immediately following the incident, which could have prevented the prolonged unrest. Sircar's resignation from Parliament and his decision to leave politics highlight the growing disillusionment with the TMC government and its alleged corruption, putting further pressure on Mamata Banerjee to address these concerns.
