The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has launched a scathing attack on the Trinamool Congress (TMC) following the resignation of former TMC MP Jawahar Sircar, alleging rampant corruption within the party. Sircar, in his resignation letter to West Bengal Chief Minister and TMC leader Mamata Banerjee, cited corruption within the party as the primary reason for his decision to step down from the Rajya Sabha and withdraw from politics altogether. He claimed that the TMC leadership had failed to take action against corrupt individuals within the party, a sentiment echoed by BJP national spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla.
Poonawalla, using the hashtag ‘TMC means too much corruption,’ took to social media to amplify Sircar's allegations, asserting that corruption had permeated every institution under the Mamata Banerjee government. He further claimed that speaking out against corruption within the TMC had led to repercussions for individuals, suggesting a climate of fear and silencing of dissent. Poonawalla specifically pointed to the recent rape and murder case of a trainee doctor at the RG Kar Hospital in Kolkata, accusing the TMC government of prioritizing the protection of perpetrators and silencing of those who raised concerns over seeking justice for the victim.
The BJP leader further accused the TMC of engaging in a cover-up operation in the case, claiming that the government had prioritized protecting its own officials, including the Kolkata Police Commissioner and Sandip Ghose, over holding those responsible accountable. The BJP has seized upon this case to further its attack on the TMC, highlighting the allegations of corruption and emphasizing the party's alleged disregard for the victim and the pursuit of justice. The BJP's strategy appears to be to capitalize on the ongoing public outrage over the case to erode public confidence in the TMC government and further its own political ambitions in West Bengal.
