The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has clarified the situation regarding Sarfaraz Khan's availability for the upcoming Irani Cup, confirming that the talented batsman will be released to play for Mumbai if he is not included in the playing XI for the second Test match against Bangladesh. This decision comes after much speculation surrounding Sarfaraz's future, particularly after his absence from the first Test match.
The BCCI's official statement indicates that Sarfaraz, who has been retained in the Team India squad for the second Test, will be allowed to represent Mumbai in the Irani Cup, subject to him not being selected for the crucial Test match scheduled to begin in Kanpur on September 27th. This decision ensures that Sarfaraz can continue to showcase his skills and maintain his match fitness, even if he doesn't get an opportunity to play at the international level in this particular series.
The BCCI's announcement also extended to Yash Dayal and Dhruv Jurel, who have been included in the Rest of India squad for the Irani Cup. Their participation in the tournament will similarly hinge on their selection for the second Test against Bangladesh. Meanwhile, Ajinkya Rahane is set to captain Ranji Trophy champions Mumbai in the Irani Cup clash against Rest of India in Lucknow. It is expected that Mumbai will field a strong team, with top players like Shreyas Iyer, Musheer Khan, Shams Mulani, and Tanush Kotian all slated to participate.
Adding to the intrigue, Suryakumar Yadav, India's T20 skipper, and all-rounder Shivam Dube, both automatic picks in the Indian T20 squad, will not be participating in the Irani Cup. They have been excused from the tournament to prepare for the upcoming T20I series against Australia, which is scheduled to begin on October 6th in Gwalior.
