  • Puja committees agreed to turn off music and sound systems during azaan and namaz.
  • Government emphasizes communal harmony and promises security during the festival.

The interim government of Bangladesh has made a unique request to the Hindu community in the country, urging them to temporarily pause Durga Puja-related activities, particularly the playing of musical instruments, five minutes before the call to prayer (azaan) and throughout the prayer times (namaz). This request comes ahead of the Durga Puja celebrations, a significant religious festival for Hindus in Bangladesh. The announcement was made by Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury on Tuesday, showcasing the government's commitment to maintaining religious harmony and respect during the festive period.

Chowdhury emphasized that puja committees must comply with this request and turn off musical instruments and sound systems during the specified prayer times. The puja committees have reportedly agreed to cooperate, demonstrating their understanding of the importance of respecting religious practices and sensitivities. This year, the country is set to witness a large-scale celebration with 32,666 puja mandaps (pandals) being erected across the country, including 157 in Dhaka South City Corporation and 88 in Dhaka North City Corporation. While last year saw a slightly higher number of mandaps at 33,431, Chowdhury anticipates this year's celebrations to be even more grand, citing the Puja Celebration Parishad.

Beyond the request for a brief pause during prayer times, the government has also taken steps to ensure the safety and security of the festival. Chowdhury stated that discussions have been held to guarantee 24/7 security at all puja mandaps to prevent any potential disruptions or “evil activities” by miscreants. This proactive approach demonstrates the government's commitment to safeguarding the peaceful and joyous celebration of Durga Puja. Furthermore, in a related address to the nation on Wednesday, Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus stressed the importance of communal harmony in Bangladesh, urging citizens to avoid any actions that could disrupt religious peace. He reiterated the government's commitment to maintaining a democratic Bangladesh and cautioned those who attempt to take the law into their own hands or create disorder, emphasizing that they will face appropriate punishment.
