The Central Government has announced the appointment of Chief Justices for eight High Courts across India. These appointments were made based on recommendations from the Supreme Court collegium, a body responsible for recommending judges for higher judicial positions in the country.

The newly appointed Chief Justices and their respective High Courts are as follows: Justice Manmohan, currently Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court. Justice Rajiv Shakdher, currently a judge of Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court. Justice Suresh Kumar Kait, also a judge of Delhi High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Madhya Pradesh High Court.

In addition to these appointments, Justice Indra Prasanna Mukerji, a judge of Calcutta High Court, will now serve as Chief Justice of Meghalaya High Court. Justice Nitin Madhukar Jamdar, a judge of Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Kerala High Court. Justice Tashi Rabstan, a judge of Jammu & Kashmir & Ladakh High Court, will now serve as the Chief Justice of the same High Court. Justice KR Shriram, a judge of Bombay High Court, has been appointed as the Chief Justice of Madras High Court. Finally, Justice MS Ramachandra Rao, currently serving as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court, will assume the role of Chief Justice of Jharkhand High Court.

The Supreme Court collegium initially made recommendations for these High Courts on July 11th. However, two months later, on September 17th, the collegium revised three of its earlier proposals, specifically regarding Justices Kait, Rabstan, and GS Sandhawalia. The collegium has also proposed that Justice GS Sandhawalia, currently serving on the Punjab & Haryana High Court, be appointed as the Chief Justice of Himachal Pradesh High Court after Justice Shakhder's retirement on October 18th.

These appointments are significant as they involve the appointment of high-ranking judicial officials responsible for overseeing the functioning of these High Courts. The role of a Chief Justice is crucial in ensuring the efficient and impartial administration of justice within the court system.
