Vinesh Phogat's return to India was met with a hero's welcome, despite her heartbreaking disqualification from the Paris Olympics. The wrestler, who had made history as the first Indian woman to reach the finals of the women's 50kg freestyle wrestling competition, was greeted with a massive outpouring of support from her fellow athletes, supporters, and most importantly, her village. She had faced an unfortunate setback after being disqualified for being over the weight limit, a decision that eventually led to her retirement from the sport. Despite the disappointment, Vinesh's journey to the Olympic finals had captured the hearts of millions in India, solidifying her status as a national icon.
Upon her arrival at the Delhi airport, Vinesh was overwhelmed by the immense love and support she received. Fellow Olympians Sakshi Malik and Bajrang Punia were among those present to welcome her home. Her journey from the airport to her native village of Balali in Haryana took over 12 hours, as throngs of people lined the roads to catch a glimpse of the courageous wrestler. The village was decked in celebration mode, reflecting the unwavering support Vinesh had received throughout her career.
The villagers had even crowdfunded a prize money for Vinesh, demonstrating the deep respect and admiration they held for her. A chowkidar (watchman), who had known Vinesh since she was a child, contributed Rs 100 rupees, calling her the 'bravest girl in the world.' This heartfelt gesture underscored the immense impact Vinesh had on her community. The members of the Fauji Bhaichara group also contributed a significant amount to the reward, highlighting the collective appreciation for her achievements.
The welcome was further amplified by the preparation of 750kgs of ladoos with desi ghee, a testament to the grand celebration planned for Vinesh. The village sarpanch, Reetika Sangwan, who couldn't attend the ceremony personally, sent her husband with a special request – to bring a piece of cloth touched by Vinesh. He planned to use this cloth for his newborn son, hoping to instill the same courage and determination in him as Vinesh embodies. The emotional outpouring from her village showcased Vinesh's enduring legacy as a symbol of courage, resilience, and inspiration for millions across India.
