RG Kar Hospital Crime Scene Row: Police Deny Compromise
  • Kolkata Police refute claims of a compromised crime scene
  • Viral picture shows individuals at the seminar room
  • BJP alleges crime scene was destroyed and evidence lost

The alleged compromise of the crime scene at Kolkata's RG Kar Hospital, where a 31-year-old doctor was found murdered, has sparked a heated debate between the Kolkata Police and the BJP. A picture of a crowded seminar room, where the body was discovered, went viral on social media, leading to questions about the presence of so many individuals in the crime scene and accusations of the scene being tampered with. The CBI, during a Supreme Court hearing, alleged that the evidence in the case had been hampered and the crime scene altered, further intensifying the controversy.

The Kolkata Police, however, vehemently refuted these claims, asserting that the crime scene was “not compromised” and that all individuals in the viral photograph were authorized personnel. DCP Central, Indira Mukherjee, provided detailed explanations during a press briefing, identifying each person present in the photo and clarifying their roles in the investigation. She stated that no unauthorized individuals were allowed access to the cordoned-off area where the body was found. Mukherjee explained that the presence of personnel included investigators, forensic experts, a videographer, and senior police officers, all of whom were involved in the investigation process. She also described a second photo, taken during the inquest process, identifying the individuals present, including witnesses, forensic science laboratory (FSL) personnel, and fingerprint experts.

The police also maintained that no evidence was lost during the investigation, providing a timeline of events starting from the initial report of the incident at 10:10 am on August 9th to the establishment of a second cordon by 10:30 am. However, the BJP, through its IT cell head Amit Malviya, alleged that the crime scene was destroyed and evidence lost. Malviya shared a video, purportedly from August 9th, showing numerous individuals including doctors, policemen, hospital staff, and outsiders within the seminar room. He questioned the intention of the Mamata Banerjee government and its alleged attempt to cover up the crime, highlighting the out-of-line statements made by the Kolkata Police Commissioner.

The incident, which occurred on August 9th, saw the discovery of the semi-naked body of the trainee doctor, a second-year postgraduate student, in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital. The horrific crime triggered widespread protests across the country, demanding justice for the victim and stringent punishment for the perpetrators. The allegations of a compromised crime scene and the conflicting statements from the Kolkata Police and the BJP have further fueled public outrage and heightened the demand for a thorough and transparent investigation into this tragic case.
