The 17th edition of the Paralympic Games commenced in Paris, France, with a vibrant opening ceremony held at the Palace La Concorde. The event showcased a spirit of unity and determination as athletes from around the world gathered to compete in this global sporting spectacle. The Indian contingent, comprising 84 athletes, marched proudly under the leadership of flagbearers Sumit Antil and Bhagyashri Jadhav, aiming to achieve remarkable feats in Paris. The ceremony was themed ‘Paradox’, highlighting the contrasting narratives of resilience and triumph that characterize the Paralympic movement. Performers captivated the audience with their elegant choreography, adorned in bespoke French fashion, setting the stage for the grand entrance of the athletes. The atmosphere crackled with anticipation as the athletes made their way around the venue, acknowledging the cheers of the crowd and their own journeys of overcoming adversity.

French President Emmanuel Macron, alongside his partner Brigitte, and International Paralympic Committee head Andrew Parsons, graced the VIP section with their presence. The ceremony seamlessly transitioned from artistic performances to heartfelt speeches. Tony Estanguet, President of the Paris 2024 Olympics and Paralympics committee, warmly welcomed the participants and spectators to the ‘land of love’ and ‘land of revolution’, setting the tone for a celebration of inclusivity and athletic excellence. Andrew Parsons, in a passionate address, called for an ‘inclusion revolution’, urging the world to embrace unity and create a more inclusive society. He emphasized the transformative power of sport and its ability to break down barriers and promote understanding.

President Macron formally declared the games open, setting the stage for two weeks of fierce competition and inspiring performances. The Indian contingent, having achieved a record 19 medals at the Tokyo Paralympics in 2021, is aiming to surpass that achievement in Paris. With a strong and determined team, India is poised to make a significant mark on the global stage. The ceremony concluded with a symbolic act of lighting the cauldron, igniting the Paralympic flame and signaling the official start of the games. Five athletes, Charles Antonin Kouakou, Nantenin Keita, Fabien Lamirault, Elodie Lorandi, and Alexis Hanquinquant, had the honor of lighting the cauldron, symbolizing the shared journey of perseverance and achievement. As an air balloon carrying the flame soared into the sky, the Paralympics was officially declared open, promising two weeks of awe-inspiring performances and a celebration of human potential.
