The Pakistan cricket team is facing a significant blow to its pace attack just ahead of the crucial two-match Test series against Bangladesh at home. Star pacer Aamir Jamal has been forced to withdraw from the squad due to persistent fitness issues, further weakening Pakistan's already depleted lineup. Jamal, who sustained a back injury while playing County cricket in England earlier this year, was initially named in Pakistan's squad for the ICC World Test Championship series, contingent upon a successful fitness evaluation. However, the 28-year-old has failed to fully recover from his back ailment and has been sent to the National Cricket Academy in Lahore for rehabilitation.
Jamal's absence further exacerbates the challenges facing Pakistan's bowling unit, which has already been depleted by the release of spinner Abrar Ahmed and top-order batter Kamran Ghulam over the weekend. The team now boasts a reduced squad of just 14 players for the Test series, which commences on Wednesday. With Jamal's withdrawal, Pakistan will field an all-pace attack in the first Test against Bangladesh, led by the formidable left-arm quick Shaheen Afridi and the returning Naseem Shah. The pace bowling lineup will also include Khurram Shehzad and Mir Hamza.
Jamal's injury is a significant setback for the young fast bowler, who was expected to compete for a spot in the final XI after his impressive debut performance against Australia earlier this year. His recovery will now delay his chance to make a substantial impact on the international stage. Pakistan, currently ranked sixth in the World Test Championship standings, will be aiming for a series victory against Bangladesh to bolster their chances of qualifying for next year's one-off final at Lord's. To achieve this goal, they will need to overcome the challenge of fielding a weakened pace attack in the absence of Aamir Jamal.
