The Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), led by Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar, organized silent protests across Maharashtra in response to the collapse of a Chhatrapati Shivaji statue in Malvan. This demonstration came a day after Pawar publicly apologized for the incident, which occurred nearly nine months after the statue's unveiling by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The NCP's actions stand in contrast to their allies, who have accused the opposition of politicizing the situation.
The NCP's protests involved “self-suffering silent protests” in every district of the state, demanding the installation of a more durable and larger statue of Shivaji Maharaj at the same location. NCP state unit chief and Lok Sabha MP Sunil Tatkare justified the protests by stating that everyone has the right to protest in a democracy and that the statue collapse was an unfortunate and distressing event. The party also submitted memorandums to authorities demanding strict action against those responsible for the collapse.
The protests were staged in front of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj statues in prominent locations like Chembur and Juhu Chowpatty in Mumbai. The NCP's stance on the issue has garnered attention, highlighting the political sensitivity surrounding the incident and the potential for it to be used as a platform for political maneuvering in the state.
