The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has proposed a revolutionary change in the evaluation system for Class 12 students. In a report titled ‘Establishing Equivalence across Education Boards’, released in July, NCERT suggests that students' performance in Classes 9, 10, and 11 should be factored into their Class 12 board results. This progressive assessment framework, designed to provide a more holistic view of students' academic progress, aims to move away from solely relying on final exams for determining a student's overall performance.

The report proposes a progressive weightage system for formative (ongoing) and summative (end-term) assessments across the grades. This system progressively emphasizes summative assessment as students advance, with Class 9 having a 7% formative and 30% summative split, Class 10 a 50% split, Class 11 a 40% formative and 60% summative, and Class 12 a 30% formative and 70% summative ratio. This means that students' performance throughout their academic journey from Class 9 to Class 12 will significantly contribute to their final scores, reflecting a more comprehensive evaluation of their learning.

The proposed assessment framework for Classes 10 and 12 is divided into two terms, each incorporating various assessment methods. The first term will feature classroom assessments utilizing a variety of methods, including Portfolio Assessment, Self-Assessment, Peer Assessment, Teacher Observation, Group Work, and Laboratory activities. The second term will introduce formative assessment components such as Project Work, Paper Presentations with viva voice, and Group Discussions. The summative assessment for both terms will consist of common papers, encompassing a range of question types, linked to Learning Outcomes and designed according to a pre-determined question paper blueprint. This new system aims to promote a more comprehensive understanding of students' abilities and their ability to apply their knowledge in real-world contexts.
