The arrest of Sandip Ghosh, the former Principal of Kolkata's RG Kar Medical College, is imminent following the filing of non-bailable charges against him in a corruption case. The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has taken over the investigation, uncovering a wealth of evidence during an 11-hour search of Ghosh's home. These charges stem from allegations of financial misconduct and bribery during his tenure as the head of the institution.
The initial allegations were brought forward by Akhtar Ali, the former Deputy Superintendent of RG Kar Hospital, who accused Ghosh of engaging in various illicit activities. These accusations included the illegal sale of unclaimed corpses, trafficking of biomedical waste, and manipulating tenders to favor specific suppliers. Ali also alleged that students were pressured to pay hefty sums, ranging from Rs 5 to 8 lakh, to ensure their exam success. These accusations gained traction following the tragic rape-murder of a young doctor within the hospital premises, leading to widespread public outrage and calls for investigation.
The CBI investigation has focused on multiple aspects of alleged corruption. Ghosh has been questioned for 10 consecutive days and has undergone a polygraph test. The focus of these inquiries has centered around the financial irregularities and the extent of his involvement in the alleged bribery schemes. Although Ghosh has not been implicated in the rape-murder case, the corruption charges against him are considered non-bailable, meaning he will remain in custody until the completion of the legal proceedings.
