Kolkata Doctor's Family Under House Arrest, Claims Congress Leader
  • Congress leader claims doctor's family is under house arrest.
  • Family alleges police offered money for quick cremation.
  • CBI investigates rape-murder, protests continue.

The tragic death of a trainee doctor in Kolkata, allegedly due to rape and murder, has sparked outrage and protests, with allegations of police misconduct and government pressure adding fuel to the fire. Congress leader Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has claimed that the victim's family is being held under virtual house arrest by the authorities, raising serious concerns about the integrity of the investigation. Chowdhury, who visited the family, stated that they are being prevented from leaving their residence under various pretexts, with police and CISF creating a barricade around their home.

Adding to the growing sense of unease, Chowdhury alleged that the police, under the direction of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government, offered money to the victim's father in an attempt to persuade him to cremate his daughter's body without delay. This allegation further fuels suspicions of a potential cover-up and attempts to influence the course of justice. The family has also raised concerns about the involvement of multiple individuals in the crime, adding another layer of complexity to the case.

The murder of the young doctor, whose body was found in the seminar hall of RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9th, has triggered widespread protests by junior doctors who are demanding justice for their colleague. They have been on a cease-work strike since the discovery, highlighting the lack of security at medical institutions and demanding stronger measures to prevent such incidents in the future. The incident has also sparked public outrage, with celebrities and various organizations expressing their condemnation of the crime and demanding swift action from the authorities.

The Calcutta High Court, recognizing the gravity of the situation and the public outcry, ordered the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) to take over the investigation. One civic volunteer of the Kolkata Police has been arrested in connection with the crime, but the protests continue, fueled by the allegations of police misconduct and the lingering sense of distrust in the authorities' ability to deliver justice. The case has raised serious concerns about the safety of women in India, particularly within medical institutions, and the need for accountability and transparency in the handling of such sensitive cases.
