A wolf responsible for the deaths of at least eight people, including seven children, in Uttar Pradesh's Bahraich district has been captured. The wolf, part of a pack of six, was caught after forest department officials used firecrackers and tranquilizers to trap it. It has been taken to a zoo.
The wolf attacks in Bahraich have spanned over two months, with the latest incident occurring on Tuesday night. The attacks have sparked fear and panic in the area, leading to the Uttar Pradesh government launching 'Operation Bhediya' to capture the pack. The operation involved the deployment of 16 teams using drone cameras and thermal drone mapping techniques to track the wolves.
In addition to the technology, officials have employed unusual tactics to deter the wolves, such as setting fire to elephant dung. This creates a scent that mimics the presence of elephants, which wolves naturally avoid. The officials also placed traps with bait in remote areas to lure the animals.
The government has taken steps to protect the local population, including installing doors at houses lacking them, conducting night patrols in villages, and raising awareness about the wolf attacks through ASHA workers. Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is closely monitoring the operation.
While four wolves have been captured so far, two remain at large. Authorities are continuing efforts to capture the remaining wolves and ensure the safety of the local residents. The incident highlights the importance of wildlife conservation and the need for measures to minimize human-wildlife conflict.
