India's Golden Quadrilateral Expands with 12 Industrial Smart Cities
  • India approves 12 industrial smart cities
  • These cities will create 1 million jobs
  • The project aims to boost manufacturing

India's government has taken a significant step towards boosting domestic manufacturing and creating employment opportunities by approving the construction of 12 industrial smart cities. This ambitious project, part of the National Industrial Corridor Development Programme (NICDP), aims to establish a network of strategically located cities that will serve as hubs for various industries, including technical textiles, fabrication, electric vehicles, aero logistics, and food processing.

The 12 cities, spread across 10 states including Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Kerala, and Telangana, are strategically located along six major industrial corridors, forming a 'golden quadrilateral' that will enhance connectivity and economic development. These cities are expected to be operational by 2027, and the government has committed an outlay of Rs 28,602 crore, anticipating a potential investment of Rs 1.5 lakh crore and the creation of 1 million direct jobs and up to 3 million indirect jobs.

The industrial smart cities are designed to offer a 'plug and play' environment for businesses, providing essential infrastructure such as potable drinking water, 24-hour electricity, and 'walk-to-work' concepts. The government has also expedited the process by securing environmental clearances for all 12 projects, facilitating easier access for investors. To further streamline the process, a single window clearance system will be implemented.

The government is encouraging participation from both domestic and international investors, with Singapore and Switzerland expressing interest in dedicated industrial spaces. The project is being marketed by Invest India to attract investment and promote the potential of these cities. Deloitte India has hailed the initiative as a significant step towards positioning India as a global manufacturing powerhouse, highlighting its contribution to boosting the manufacturing sector's GDP and generating employment opportunities.

The project's success hinges on collaboration between the central government and state governments. Previous delays due to land acquisition issues have been addressed, with states now cooperating to facilitate the implementation of the industrial parks. The government's proactive approach, with readily available land, flexible payment terms, and streamlined processes, is expected to attract investors and propel India towards achieving its manufacturing goals.
