The upcoming visit of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to India, scheduled for August 19 and 20, signifies a pivotal moment in the strengthening of bilateral relations between the two nations. This visit, the first by a Malaysian Prime Minister since 2018, underscores the deepening partnership that has evolved since the relationship was elevated to an Enhanced Strategic Partnership during Prime Minister Narendra Modi's visit in 2015.
India and Malaysia share a history of close ties dating back to 1957, marked by strong cultural connections and a significant Indian diaspora in Malaysia. The third largest Indian diaspora globally resides in Malaysia, with a sizable population of 2.75 million persons of Indian origin. This strong cultural bridge further enhances the natural connection between the two nations.
The economic and trade relationship between India and Malaysia has been on an upward trajectory. Malaysia is India's 13th largest trade partner and New Delhi's third largest trading partner in ASEAN, while India ranks among Malaysia's top 10 trade partners. The two-way trade volume reached approximately $20 billion in 2022-23, with a projected increase in the coming years. Both nations are actively seeking to expand trade opportunities, evidenced by their efforts to create a framework for trade in national currencies and review the comprehensive economic cooperation agreement.
Beyond economic ties, India and Malaysia are also strengthening their defense cooperation. The signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on defense cooperation in 1993 serves as the foundation for this partnership. Recent developments include an amendment to the MoU in 2023, aimed at expanding collaboration in areas of mutual interest. Malaysia's interest in acquiring India's indigenously developed Tejas aircraft further underscores the growing defense partnership.
Tourism is another area where India and Malaysia share a strong connection. India is Malaysia's fifth largest source of tourists, and the Malaysian government has implemented visa-free travel for Indians from December 1, 2023, to December 31, 2024, to boost inbound tourism. India has also reciprocated by offering Malaysian nationals a gratis 30-day double-entry tourist visa, fostering a reciprocal flow of tourists.
While the two nations have enjoyed a generally positive relationship, there have been periods of tension, such as in 2019 when former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad criticized India's actions in Jammu and Kashmir. This led to strained relations and retaliatory measures by India. However, the current leadership in both countries is committed to rebuilding and strengthening the partnership.
Anwar Ibrahim's visit is expected to be a significant step in this direction. It will provide a platform for high-level discussions on a range of issues, from economic cooperation and defense collaboration to cultural exchange and regional stability. Both countries recognize the importance of deepening their ties and forging a robust partnership in the face of global challenges.
