The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted heavy rainfall in northern and eastern parts of India this week, bringing much-needed relief to regions experiencing rainfall deficits. The forecast comes as the southwest monsoon season nears its end, with over three-quarters of the season already completed. Despite the deficit in some areas, the all-India rainfall has been recorded at 622.2mm, which is 4% above normal.
The IMD attributes the expected heavy rainfall to the development of a fresh low-pressure system in the Bay of Bengal. This system is anticipated to move across Bangladesh and into the Gangetic West Bengal, Jharkhand, Bihar, and Odisha. As a result, widespread rainfall with intermittent heavy spells is expected in these regions, particularly in Bihar, Jharkhand, and West Bengal. The heavy rainfall is projected to continue for the next three to four days, bringing much-needed relief to areas that have been experiencing below-average rainfall during this monsoon season.
The heavy rainfall is not confined to eastern India. Enhanced rainfall is also expected in Jammu-Kashmir-Ladakh-Gilgit-Baltistan-Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Delhi, Chandigarh, Rajasthan, and eastern parts of Uttar Pradesh until August 21. Meanwhile, the monsoon trough, as of Sunday, remains along its normal position. As we approach the end of the monsoon season, the IMD's extended range forecast indicates that rainfall activity is likely to pick up towards the month-end over peninsular India. Additionally, cyclonic circulations have been observed over south-west Pakistan and north Karnataka regions.
Further intensifying the rainfall in certain areas, Marathwada, Vidarbha in Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh, and Madhya Pradesh are expected to receive heavy rainfall until August 24. This widespread rainfall, predicted across various regions, brings hope of replenishing water reserves and mitigating the effects of the earlier rainfall deficits. The IMD's forecast offers valuable information for farmers, authorities, and residents to prepare for the anticipated heavy rainfall and take necessary measures to ensure safety and minimize potential disruptions.
