The recent heavy rainfall in Gujarat has significantly impacted industrial activity across the state, leading to production disruptions and estimated losses of up to 50%. Major industrial hubs like Ahmedabad, Rajkot, Vadodara, and Anand witnessed a considerable slowdown in production, with waterlogging and low worker turnout cited as primary reasons for the decline.
The chemical and pharmaceutical sectors, with their continuous process units, remained operational to some extent. However, the majority of other industries experienced near-complete shutdowns. The Saurashtra region was particularly affected, with the Lodhika GIDC estate, a major industrial zone, remaining largely inactive due to heavy rain.
Sanand GIDC, often promoted as a model industrial estate, also faced significant challenges. Power outages and water disruptions affected approximately 300 out of the 550 factories in the area. The Sanand Industries Association reported a flooded substation, halting power supply to numerous units, and a shortage of water due to the power failure. Despite several representations seeking solutions to address waterlogging issues, no concrete measures have been implemented.
Other major GIDC estates, including Manjusar, Savli, and Makarpura, reported similar disruptions, with production activities coming to a standstill due to the relentless rain. While the exact extent of production loss is yet to be determined, industry experts estimate a significant drop of at least 50%, reflecting the severe impact of the recent weather events on Gujarat's industrial sector.
The heavy rainfall has brought to the forefront the need for better infrastructure and preparedness in dealing with such situations. While the immediate focus remains on addressing the current disruptions, it is crucial to learn from this experience and implement measures to mitigate the impact of future weather events on industrial activity in Gujarat.
