Dighi Smart City Project to Drive Maharashtra's Economy
  • Dighi Port Industrial Area approved as smart city
  • Rs 5,469 crore investment anticipated, creating jobs
  • Project aims to boost Maharashtra's economy

The Maharashtra government's vision for a $1 trillion economy is receiving a significant boost with the Union Cabinet's approval for the establishment of the Dighi Port Industrial Area as an industrial smart city in Raigad district. This ambitious project, located 55 km east of Dighi Port, spans 6,056 acres and involves an investment of Rs 5,469 crore. It is expected to attract investments worth Rs 38,000 crore and create approximately 109,185 jobs, making it a key driver of economic growth in the region.

The development of the Dighi smart city is strategically aligned with Maharashtra's economic ambitions. Its focus on sectors such as engineering, pharmaceuticals, chemicals, textiles, and food and beverages is aimed at diversifying the state's industrial base and attracting both domestic and international investment. The city's location as a port city will play a crucial role in port-led industrialisation, leveraging its proximity to the upcoming Dighi Port. This strategic positioning will facilitate seamless movement of goods and services, enhancing the competitiveness of businesses operating in the region.

Beyond economic benefits, the Dighi smart city is also expected to contribute to the overall development of the region. It is anticipated to ease congestion in the Mumbai Metropolitan Area by offering connectivity to both Mumbai and Pune. Furthermore, its development is projected to promote eco and heritage tourism in the region, further diversifying the local economy and creating new opportunities for the community. In terms of connectivity, the Dighi industrial smart city will benefit from its proximity to major national and state highways, rail links, and airports, ensuring efficient movement of people and goods.

The proposed Multi-Modal Logistic Park at Dighi is a key aspect of the project's infrastructure development. This park is designed to optimize freight and passenger movement, reducing logistics costs from the current 14-16 per cent to around 9 per cent. This will significantly enhance the efficiency and competitiveness of businesses operating in the region by streamlining logistics processes and reducing operational costs.

With the Dighi smart city project, Maharashtra is set to witness a transformative change in its infrastructure landscape. This project will not only create new economic opportunities but also contribute to the overall development of the region, making Maharashtra a leading industrial and economic powerhouse in the country. The government's commitment to infrastructure development, coupled with the strategic location and potential of Dighi, suggests that this project will play a crucial role in achieving Maharashtra's economic aspirations.
