The political landscape in Tamil Nadu is abuzz with activity, as opposition leaders continue to challenge the ruling DMK government on various fronts. One of the most prominent issues being raised is the reinstatement of the old pension scheme (OPS). T.T.V. Dhinakaran, general secretary of the AMMK, has issued a strong call for the DMK government to revert back to the OPS for government employees, including schoolteachers. This plea comes in the wake of the planned Teachers’ Day protest on September 5th, where teachers are expected to voice their concerns regarding the current pension system.
Dhinakaran’s criticism is directed at the DMK’s alleged failure to honor its electoral promise of reintroducing the OPS. He emphasizes the need for the government to engage in meaningful dialogue with teachers and other government employees before taking any steps to revive the old pension system. The AMMK leader’s stance mirrors the concerns of many government employees who believe the current contributory pension scheme is inadequate and unfair.
Adding another layer to the political tensions is the recent collapse of a ₹6.5 crore bed protection wall near the new Coleroon bridge in Tiruchi. The AIADMK, led by Edappadi K. Palaniswami, has demanded a thorough investigation into the matter. Palaniswami’s statement highlights concerns about the quality of infrastructure projects undertaken by the current government. He has urged the authorities to construct a robust check dam to prevent further erosion and damage.
